Giving Garden

The garden provides a sustainable gardening opportunity for the citizens of Carrollton, promoting organic food practices, conservation, philanthropy, and community development. The organization donates half of what they grow to non-profit food pantries, so that those in need may enjoy the benefits of fresh produce. Since inception in 2010, the garden has donated over 14 tons of produce to help our community.

The Garden’s History

After Aldersgate United Methodist Church relocated to its new property, then pastor Rev. Woody Weilage communicated a vision for a community garden on the property in one of his Sunday morning messages in 2009. The idea was embraced by several church members, who formed a seed committee to further develop the concept. The committee soon learned that it shared objectives with Keep Carrollton Beautiful, and merged its efforts with this nonprofit group. The garden was built in the spring of 2010 and each year our harvest is larger than the previous year.

Community Impact

The Giving Garden, Carrollton’s first community garden, was honored on Tuesday January 19, 2021 with a proclamation from the Carrollton City Council for the record breaking year of growing 4,411 pounds of donated food in 2020.

Since its first shared harvest, The Giving Garden has donated over 28,000 lbs. to Christian Community Action’s food pantry, AUMC’s Food Share, Metrocrest Services, and Independence Garden’s “Garden to Table Dinner.” That’s more than 14 TONS!  In the Giving Garden, people of all ages, ethnicities, and capabilities come together to help our community.

The Giving Garden was honored as the City of Carrollton’s most Outstanding Community Organization in 2018!

Get Involved

In addition to helping others, the gardeners make friends, enjoy our own harvests, laugh, learn about gardening, and get plenty of exercise. We are accepting applications for garden bed rentals! Even if you know nothing about growing produce in Texas, we can teach you.

If you would like to help out the garden without actually gardening, you can donate financially.  The Giving Garden donations should be sent to:
