Open Arms

A Ministry for Adults with Special Needs

Open Arms is a monthly ministry of Aldersgate UMC, providing a Saturday afternoon of care and fun for adults with special needs, and a time of respite for their caregivers. Anyone can help, either behind the scenes or by being a “buddy” to one of our participants. To learn more, please contact Gail Darden.

Open Arms History

The Open Arms Ministry welcomed its first gathering of eager participants and amazing volunteers on Saturday, September 13th, 2008. Some are still active to this day!

It all started with an inseparable bond. Creator and Co-Founder, Nancy Messuri’s close relationship with her sister with special needs is the inspiration behind the Open Arms Ministry. Nancy dreamed of developing a program for “wonderfully unique” adults just like her sister. In its inception, Nancy wanted a program that served a dual purpose. 1) A socially inviting environment for adults with special needs, and 2) a respite program for their caregivers. After visiting several programs around the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, Lynn Martin, Laura Webb, Pastor Woody Weilage, Liz Moen, and Nancy Messuri formed the committee that would go on to develop The Open Arms Ministry.

When and where?

Open Arms Ministry occurs on the 2nd Saturday of each month, with the exception of August, at Aldersgate United Methodist Church.

Ministry Safe

At Open Arms participant safety is our number one priority. Open Arms has partnered with MinistrySafe to provide training and resources to all Open Arms volunteers.

Reaching Out

With the help of participants and volunteers alike, Open Arms regularly contributes to foundations like The Ronald McDonald House by collecting pop tabs on aluminum cans. Donations are collected on a monthly basis. When the collection bin reaches capacity, Open Arms will take a field trip to the Ronald McDonald House to submit the pop tabs.
