Tis the Season

Dear church family,

I have caught myself several times over the last couple of weeks using the phrase, “Tis the Season”.  I have used it when talking with colleagues about the crazy and full schedule December brings.  I have used it when commiserating with family and friends about the stress of shopping, the rushing from place to place, and the struggle of juggling all the school programs, parties, and special events. I have even used it as I have helped myself to wonderful Christmas desserts to help me feel less guilty. But wait a minute… the season is more than this… much more.

The season isn’t all bad, and sometimes we just need to have a change in perspective. Sometimes we need to look around us and stop to see the good all around us.  If I look for and reflect upon the tangible ways we see hope, joy, peace, and love being shared with us and by us to others I can see it.

What if instead I started saying,

Tis the Season…

For Blessing Bags for the 30 homeless filled with winter gloves, scarfs, and socks to be delivered by Carrollton Police Department.

Tis the season for the outpouring of generosity, for those going over and above, giving gifts to those in need.

Tis the season when all the needs on the Angel Tree are filled.

Tis the Season for giving time and for helping celebrate Christmas with our neighbors.

Tis the Season for delivering food to our neighbors.

Tis the Season for all those who help care for others. For helping share the light of Christ during what can be the darkest time of the year.

These are just a few ways I have seen our congregation step up and out to show God’s love to others. Ways in which I have personally witnessed the season come alive. I have seen God’s great love, compassion, and care made real again. I hope you see it too.

I'll see you in worship (online or in person) this Sunday as we continue our sermon series the INN and move one step closer to Bethlehem and welcoming the Christ Child.

With Gratitude,
Rodney Whitfield
