Obstacles or Opportunities

Dear church family,

After my sermon on Sunday, Rev. Sarah Roberts shared this video with me. In it, a man stops and gets out of his car to help a sloth cross the street.

I encourage you to watch it (only 38 seconds). It is just one real life example of how one person can make an impact when they see the opportunity in front of them instead of an obstacle. The man took time. When he could have easily been upset by the situation, or gone around to the other side of the street, instead he stopped and did something.

Go ahead, watch it now. It is worth it! Here's the link again: Helping a Sloth Cross the Road

Wait for it… Did you notice what the sloth did at the end?

Did you see it?

He reached back towards the man, like he was thanking him for caring for him, for helping him out, for being there for him in that moment and taking the time to show love.

Being generous with our time, whether with a sloth or with neighbor, friend, classmate, or colleague, has an impact on them. It shows respect, value, and love. When we are the beneficiaries of generosity, the natural response is to give thanks!

This Sunday, February 6, we begin a special worship series and generosity campaign entitled, “Greater Than.” As we reflect upon our potential impact as disciples of Christ through the generosity of our time, talents, and tithes we learn being generous is about aligning our priorities with God’s priorities, aligning our hearts with God’s heart. We grow in that generosity as part of our individual spirituality. We also grow in generosity within our faith community and greater things are possible!

Stay Warm!

With gratitude,
Rodney Whitfield
Senior Pastor
